Reduce PDF size fast: a practical guide

By ConvertThoseFiles Team

Email attachment limits, slow uploads, full inboxes — there are lots of reasons to shrink a PDF. Here's how to do it without ruining quality.

Step 1: Use a lossless compressor first Try our [Compress PDF](/compress-pdf) tool. It removes duplicate objects and normalizes structure with no quality change.

Step 2: Check the image content If the PDF is mostly text, you're probably done. If it's mostly scanned images or photos, the next step matters more.

Step 3: Lower image resolution if you must For sharing on email or chat, 150 DPI is plenty. For printing, stick with 300 DPI.

Common mistakes - Recompressing a JPG over and over makes it worse each time. - "Maximum compression" presets often make text fuzzy. Medium is usually fine. - Converting to "PDF/A" can sometimes increase file size — only use it for archival needs.
