Metadata Handling Policy

What happens to embedded metadata during conversion — author, EXIF, timestamps, and document properties.

Last updated: June 29, 2026

What we preserve

Where the source and target formats both support a metadata field (e.g. document title, author), we preserve it by default.

What we transform

Format-specific metadata is mapped to the closest equivalent in the destination format when possible. Fields without an equivalent (e.g. PDF XMP namespaces with no DOCX analog) may be dropped.

What may be removed

  • EXIF location data from images during certain conversions.
  • Application-specific custom properties.
  • Comments, revision history, or tracked changes when the destination format lacks support.

User control

Where a tool offers explicit metadata-stripping options, those settings take precedence over the defaults above. Review tool-specific options before conversion when metadata is critical.
